Political Consciousness of Muhammadiyah: Historical Trajectories and Future

Muhammadiyah, as Indonesia’s largest Islamic reformist force, has survived for more than a century coping with political challenges. It is irresistible to further investigate its identity through the inquiry of historical consciousness. This paper examines formation, structure, and fate consciousness Muhammadiyah. Formation represents past, structure indicates present, denotes future. The findings demonstrate that formation commenced from 1912 2020, splitting into two gradual phases: individual (1912-1971) institutional (1971-2020). trajectory resulted in structures reasoning Muhammadiyah: scripturalist-rationalist dominant school substantial-pragmatist marginalized one.
